A Couple Of Great Books I Recommend

I recently read a couple of books that I have to share about. These were not books on my review list. These are books I wanted to read and they are so good, I just had to tell you about them.

The first is Left Neglected by Lisa Genova. It is about a woman who is in a car accident and develop a head injury. It is fiction but based on actual patients the author worked with. The book is written from the woman's perspective and it is amazing. It made me realize how quickly life can take a drastic turn. Though I have never experienced a head injury, I could relate to the characters comments above her life changes. I was in an auto accident last year and along with some other events, my life gave me some drastic changes. I found this a wonderfully inspiring book.

The Second is called The Walk by Richard Paul Evans. Another book that I highly recommend. It is about a man who loses his house, his love and his business and he decides to take a walk across the country. He writes about his walk and the people he meets who give him very valuable life lessons. You have to add both these books to your to read lkst for the year and the sooner the better. You won't regret it.

Book Review: The Accidental Bride

My Review:

What a sweet little love story. The concept seems a little absurd, but it adds to the lightness of the book. Who would have thought that a staged marriage reenactment would result in an actual marriage and then what happens? I am really not one for reading romances, but I did like this book as it is not the typical romance. You will have to read for yourself as I do not want to ruin the story for you, but I will tell you that you will not be disappointed and by reading the title, it isn't what you might expect. It was a really fun, east to read book that I breezed right through and enjoyed every minute of it. Though it was a light read for me, the characters fit well into the story and their situations are nothing to be taken lightly. Some serious decisions must be made by all involved. I think you will enjoy reading this book and I would recommend it as a good book for the new year.

My Review:

I just love the concept of this book. With thought and prayer, you choose one word to focus on for the entire year. It seems so simple, but if you are making this a part of your prayer life and scripture reading, it would not be as simple as it may seem. Our lives have themes for certain periods so it all makes sense. I really like the way that Debbie Macomber describes this process and how it has worked for her life. Great book to read at the beginning of a new year when you are looking at making changes and goals for the new year. It would be so interested to see how the word and the year would manifest itself in our lives. I guess if I were to choose my word for 2012, it would have to be joy. 2011 brought me a lot of suffering in my life and as scripture tells us, "Joy comes in the morning." I am looking forward to see what joy, God is sending me in my life and if it comes from God then I know it has to be joy. Even in our tough moments, if we can find the joy of the experience, then it makes any experience easier to deal with. I highly recommend this book for early on your 2012 reading list so perhaps you can develop these recommendations for your life.

What I Learned in 2011

I have posted a book review every day but Christmas for the last few weeks and I think I have finally caught up on book reviews. Oh, don't worry, there are more to come. In the last year I have learned the truth of several sayings in life. Never really put much thought into them until I experienced them first hand. Let me share with you:
1. Life is never what it seems.
2. Never put off tomorrow what you can do today.
3. Who knows what tomorrow brings?
4. You never know what you are capable of.
5. Put all your faith and trust in God and not man.

It was a tough year for me, but I am looking forward to what God is doing in my life.

Book Review: The Second Messiah

My Review:

What if you found out that what you believed about history, especially religious history was not true and you found out that someone has been trying to cover up the facts for years. If you had the opportunity, would you expose the truth? That is what the characters in this book struggle with. Of course, when we read books of this nature, we must keep in mind that they are fiction, a creation from the author's mind. You will not be disappointed with the thrill and mystery that surrounds this book. For some reason, I could see this taking place in reality, though it is fiction. Maybe I have been watching too much television lately but the characters seemed so real to me. The authors descriptions put you right in the middle of the story and you feel as if you are sitting back and watching it all unfold before your eyes. This is one of those books that would make a great movie. There is so much mystery that is discovered as historians study the Dead Sea Scrolls. Stories like this lead to great topics for fiction, reading and viewing.

My Review:
This is the second book in this series that I have read by this author. Nicci is a very strong character and it amazes me what she gets herself into. Of course it is fiction, so it is not hard to believe. Anything can happen in fiction and that is why we read it, for the excitement and wonder of what is going to happen next. This book is certainly full of mystery and intrigue and if you like the author's first two in the series then you are sure to like this one. The character of David is such a mystery and that continues evolving throughout this book. In my opinion, Nicci has too many men in her life and maybe that's why she gets herself into all this difficulty. Be sure to read the book so you can decide for yourself.

My Review:

This is one comprehensive book about Satan. The author leaves nothing out in this study about how to overcome Satan in our lives. We often do not want to discuss Satan, since he is our enemy, but as the author says the more we know about him the better advantage that we have. This book would make a good study for individuals or as a group study, where the questions included can be discussed with others. It is not a lengthy or complicated study and would be good for a variety of religious denominations.

My Review:

I just fell in love with this book as a family story Bible. The stories are written for children to understand and there are questions for discussion that follow each story. The stories are mostly one page in length so they would be perfect for your daily family devotions. I wish that I would have had daily devotions with my son when he was much younger. We had many discussions and taught him a life of faith. We just did not have organized devotions. In this world that we live in, it is difficult for children to learn to live with faith and God in mind if parents don't take the time with them at home to discuss the Bible and faith issues. I got my niece a copy of this book for Christmas as I thought she could benefit from reading the book and discussing the stories with her parents. This is a hardback book that would make a great gift to give to someone you care about. I like the vibrant colors in the book and on the cover. The graphics are bold and eye-catching.

Book Review: When You Don't See His Plan

My Review:

What an amazing story of courage and faith! I cannot imagine experiencing what this author has and she has written about it to share with us her life story. She had no idea what God had in store for her, but she continued to live by faith and keep going despite the difficulties she encountered. We cannot know God's plan for our lives, but with faith we continue on and this is such an inspiring story to encourage us to follow in His plan for our lives. In the past year, I have been praying for God to show me His will for my life. It has not been an easy year, but I know that He is leading my path. I am so thankful that there are writers out there willing to share their stories to give us encouragement along the way. When we choose to follow God the path is not always easy along the way, but the outcome far outweighs the obstacles we may encounter. This is a story of faith that I would recommend to others. Definitely one of my favorite reads for the year.

My Review:

The book is full of mystery and suspense in a hospital setting, the last place you would expect for murders to be taking place. The plot holds your attention throughout and you can help but like the main characters. Jacob is the kind of doctor that patients just love. Each page keeps you wondering what is going to happen next. It isn't exactly the setting where you would expect a murder to take place and I think that is what makes it so interesting, the unexpected. If you like mystery and drama then you will like reading this book. Good one to add to your reading list for the new year.

Sprinkled throughout the book is also Laura’s own story of her turbulent childhood. Every now and then, something about Maurice's struggles reminds her of her past, how her father’s alcohol-induced rages shaped the person she became and, in a way, led her to Maurice.

He started by cursing my mother and screaming at her in front of all of us. My mother pulled us closer to her and waited for it to pass. But it didn’t. My father left the room and came back with two full liquor bottles. He threw them right over our heads, and they smashed against the wall. Liquor and glass rained down on us, and we pulled up the covers to shield ourselves. My father hurled the next bottle, and then went back for two more. They shattered just above our heads; the sound was sickening. My father kept screaming and ranting, worse than I’d ever heard him before. When he ran out of bottles he went into the kitchen and overturned the table and smashed the chairs. Just then the phone rang, and my mother rushed to get it. I heard her screaming to the caller to get help. My father grabbed the phone from her and ripped the base right out of the wall. My mother ran back to us as my father kept kicking and throwing furniture, unstoppable, out of his mind.

As their friendship grows, Laura offers Maurice simple experiences he comes to treasure: learning how to set a table, trimming a Christmas tree, visiting her nieces and nephew on Long Island, and even having homemade lunches to bring to school.

“If you make me lunch,” he said, “will you put it in a brown paper bag?”

I didn’t really understand the question. "Okay, sure. But why do you want it in a brown paper bag?”

“Because when I see kids come to school with their lunch in a brown paper bag, that means someone cares about them.”

I looked away when Maurice said that, so he wouldn’t see me tear up. A simple brown paper bag, I thought.

To me, it meant nothing. To him, it was everything.

It is the heartwarming story of a friendship that has spanned thirty years, that brought life to an over-scheduled professional who had lost sight of family and happiness and hope to a hungry and desperate boy whose family background in drugs and crime and squalor seemed an inescapable fate.
He had, inside of him, some miraculous reserve of goodness and strength, some fierce will to be special. I saw this in his hopeful face the day he asked for spare change, and I see it in his eyes today. Whatever made me notice him on that street corner so many years ago is clearly something that cannot be extinguished, no matter how relentless the forces aligned against it. Some may call it spirit. Some might call it heart. Whatever it was, it drew me to him, as if we were bound by some invisible, unbreakable thread.
And whatever it is, it binds us still.

My Review:

This was an amazing book about an unusual relationship. A woman made friends with a young boy and her influence changed his life forever. It isn't too often that we hear stories such as this but they are so inspiring to us and they make us realize that even recognizing someone and speaking to them can make a world of difference. I admire the author for her willingness to share her story. If we could all only have her courage to develop relationships with those who could use are encouragements and assistance, then what a better world this could be. This is a story of what it means to truly help others. How can we read such a story and not be inspired? I highly recommend this book as a must read.

This was a nice book to read and very positive but I don't think you will find any new information in the book. I see happiness as a state of mind that we must find within ourselves. We can search all of our lives for happiness and never find it unless we quit blaming others and look within ourselves. The author has shared many of his own thoughts on happiness and the book reads as a series of affirmations. It could even be read as a daily reading to keep your mind and heart positive as you approach each day. I will warn you, if you are looking for that secret to happiness, then you won't find it within the pages of this book. And I certainly do not mean this in a negative way about the book. If you read the author's affirmations then you will be able to focus on the internal happiness that you can find in your own life. The more I think about it, I would highly recommend that this be a book that you read in segments so that your mind has time to digest the affirmations it contains.

Book Review: Bad Seed

Book Description:

Eric McCuller was born and raised in a small city called Des Moines, IA, where his life led to learning a special degree in the streets. His true teacher, his Mother, sent her son off to school with a backpack full of manipulation, sex and drugs. Eric McCuller later on graduated from college, which was prison.

My Review:

Though I enjoy reading memoirs, this is not a typical read for me. The author presents his life leading to jail with honesty in the hopes that he can help others and perhaps prevent them from making similar mistakes. Unfortunately I am not sure that those who would need to read the book would have access to do so. However, it can certainly be educational for those in the helping professions who work with street kids or big city kids. I appreciate the author's honestly as I have never read or thought much about the type of life he lead. Depending upon where and how we grow up can determine our lives if others are not there to intervene and provide appropriate assistance and role modeling. I found the book to be very educational and enlightening for me. I pray that there are kids out there who will hear this man's life story and make changes to better their own lives.

My Review:

Very interesting concept of a future world, dividing the halves and the have nots, with distinct speparation of their lives. I enjoy reading futuristic books, though this is one of those that seems difficult to imagine. I guess that adds to the intrigue of the plot and chracters. It is a great read for young adults as it is full of imagination and has a mysterious component to it as well. Monica, the main character, must find a way to save the world as it has become. She leads the reader on an adventure as she works to accomplish her mission. I found it to be an attention grabbing read, approproiate for young adult readers, without offensive language or content.

This is a book that I purchased myself, but in honor of Christmas, I thought I would review it briefly for you today.

My Review:

If you enjoy reading the works of Melody Carlson, then you will not be disappointed. Lena, the main character, is so endearing. She is trying to start her life over after spending time in prison. I must say is extremely forgiving for what she has been through and she learns to trust God for His plan for her life. This was a quick read for me. I read it in one afternoon. If you have some time over the holiday season and can get your hands on a copy of this book, I highly recommend reading it. I really don't want to tell you too much beyond the description above as I do not want to ruin the plot for you. Enjoy reading and have a Merry Christmas!

My Review:

This is one of those books with three parts and each builds upon the other to give you a timeline of historical events. It is an example of historical fiction at its finest. It tells the story of immigrants that try to make a life in this country and what it is like for them. Our country is full of immigrant as this is how it got started. I found this to be an enjoyable and interesting read. I like the way that the characters are tied together and the paper children that tell their story.

My Review:

I enjoy reading books about potential future events, especially those that seem like they could really happen and this is one of those books. We read books about families taking shelter in times of danger in the future when the world begins to fall apart, but it is not often that we think of a boat as an appropriate shelter. This family finds an area of uncharted water to wait out the storm so to speak. As it turns out, they run into other families that have the same idea. This type of plot certainly gives us food for thought. How prepared are we for times of trouble? If the stores would close tomorrow, would you have on hand what you needed to survive? Would you know how to survive without the comforts of computers and electricity? We are such an electronic society that I am not sure many would know what to do without that convenience. This is an excellent book to make us think. Though it is fiction, it certainly made me stop and wonder what I might do in a similar situation. As the description above says, this is a must read for all Americans.

My Review:

This book is part of a series about detective Roland March. It is the first book of the series that I have read, but I was not disappointed. It is full of suspense and mystery and will not disappoint the reader. March is an interesting character. He reminds me of those detectives that you see on television. The ones who dedicate their lives to the work at the risk of maintaining their family relationships. He sees a pattern to the killing he is investigating that resembles a kiling of many years before. Of course there is that question and investigation of punishing the "correct" killer. This just adds to the suspense of the story. If you enjoy reading about murder, mystery, and crime investigation then you are sure to enjoy this book.

I have been busy today, not with Christmas preparations but with catching up on book reviews. My Review

This was a great book showing the example of what it means to lead others with God in mind. Leaders come in all shapes, sizes, and personalities and many are ineffective due to their style of approaching others. The coach in this book learns how to lead to accomplish great things with his team and the lessons come from a simple man, the janitor of the high school. Our society puts too much emphasis on status and many times people are where they are because they choose to be there. We can learn from all those we come in contact with in our lives and this book is an excellent example of that. The story shows us how to lead others with God in mind and the difference that will make in the outcome. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is in a position to influence others.

My Review:

Can you imagine one person carrying the genetic sequence to heal illnesses in the world? The power, and yet burden that would be. Always on the run from someone wanting to harness the power. Caitlyn, the main character of the book is in this exact situation. She is a product of genetic engineering that was not supposed to live. She lives a life in hiding until the government begins to search for her. This book really brings out the difficulties and dramatic effects that genetic engineering can cause. Some day in the future we may have situations where genetics are altered to create the human being that is wanted by our government. It is hard for us to fathom this but it is possible. I enjoyed reading this story. It was one of those books that I had difficulty putting down until I was finished. The characters draw you in and you try to imagine what it must be like, living their lives. The plot is attractive and attention grabbing. I would recommend this book as one to add to your reading list.

My Review:

I found this book to be very interesting. It was in a realm of spiritual warfare that I have not read about. The author gives his actual life story of worshipping the devil and how he changed his life in finding God and devoting his life to Him. I guess I never really thought about someone worshipping the devil. We often talk about non-believers but we don't often discuss Satan worshippers as we are afraid of thinking about that level of darkness. The author is very desciptive and I found the book very informative as to what his life must have been like. We have to know our enemy so that we can take measures to avoid him at all costs. Satan is not something we can toy around with, we must be serious about our faith in God and denouncing the devil. I highly recommend this book to others as it wakes us up to the posibilties of what outher people in this world may be doing and we need to always be alert to our defenses against evil and the love of God will overcome.

This book helps women to come to that realization and to suggest ways to deal with this in our lives. We can live a life of fear or we can live a life of love from God. We cannot control our environments but we can control how we react to them. As women we need all the support we can get and we can only find that in our one Powerful God. I would recommend this book if you are wanting to read more about spiritual warfare or if you are struggling with these issues in your faith. You will find this book easy to read and very powerful to your thinking.

This book was written in a unique format. The author would describe situations and then the main character explained her point of view. This was one of those books that I kept reading expecting something dramatic to happen, but I never felt the drama. It was not a bad book, it was just not one that I would prefer reading. There are actually two books in the memoir, volume one and volume two. I am not sure perhaps, I just could not connect with what I was reading. It just seemed to drag out for me. Not I am not one to not recommend books as you may read this and have a totally different opinion. It is one of those that you will just have to read and see for yourself.

My Review:

This is the third book I have reviewed from this series and as with the others I think it is fantastic. It has many suggestions throughout for journaling ideas and I strongly advocate the health values of journaling. Having experienced periods of depression in my life, I can see where this would be very helpful and keep a person focused on becoming well. Sometimes with depression, it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. This book helps you to do that. It is based upon a holistic approach and as we know more than our feelings are affected when we experience episodes of depression. In addition to the practical advice given in the book, the book includes a strong biblical component that I think enhances the healing process. It also uses real-life stories from people who have had similar experiences so the reader does not feel alone in their journey to health and wellness. I would highly recommend this book and the other books from this series that I have read on Optimal Health and Hypertension. I will look forward to seeing new books from the series.

My Review:

I enjoyed reading this book about six golden retrievers, but I must admit, being the owner of a golden retriever, I am influenced by more than then book. The writer of the book tells of her personal expereinces with her golden and I was able to relate so well. Goldens seem to love to roll in anything with a scent, and often it is something we do not want to smell. She described her experience so well and I remember needing to practically bathe my service dog prior to leaving for work as she had rolled in her own scent of choice. This was a great book if you enjoy reading about dogs and what they can do for your life and the lives of those around you. They can be great companionship but they also have some wonderful healing functions to the humans around them.

My Review:

This is the second book in this series that I have read and I enjoyed this one as much as tbe first. It contains a devotional for each day with issues concerning each of the seven areas included in the decription. I like that it is written with a wholistic approach and does not concentrate on one area in our lives. When we are dealing with health issues, all areas of our lives are affected from our family to our work and nutrition. Each daily devotional contains a message from scripture and a daily focus for the day, building upon information from previous days. Each week you are encorauraged with the story of someone who has made these life changes and has made a difference in their own lives. If you are looking for a good devotional and willing to make some life changes to improve your blood pressure then this is the right book for you. I think this series would make great gift books for someone that you care a lot about.

My Review:

Have you ever wondered what would happen to your social status or how your "good" friends would react if you began living your life all for God? Would it matter if you had to make drastic changes in your life? Mary Lynn asks for God to bring her husband closer to Him and when that happens she is suprised by the results. She is even a bit embarrassed by her husband's behavior as it is affecting her social standing. I thought this was a great book that bought out many of the issues that people must face in today's world when we choose to really follow God and not just attend church on Sunday. I liked the characters that the author chose. Each must find his or her resolution to the issues at hand. They chose to change their family mission statement so that it was in line with God's will and purpose for their lives. I liked Jackson's enthusiasm but on the other hand I did understand a little about Mary Lynn's reluctance to jump in feet first. This is the first book I have read by this author but I must say that I truly enjoyed her work and will consider reading other books she has written.

My Review

To understand what this book is about we must first understand what it means to be sifted. Sifting is the violent process of separating the useful from the unnecessary, crushing and sorting of something whoe for the purpose of isolating its nourishing core from the trappings that guard it. The author asks us to look at our lives and see how we can sift out what is unpure from the treausres in our spiritual lives. Satan wants us to give him our legal authority and he deceives us into giving to him. Jesus allows Satan to put us through difficult times so that we can grow in our lives. We have to sift out the deception to grow spiritually. The book is based upon the scripture verse of Luke 22:31-32. I thought this was a pretty good book on the concept though I have read similar books that I thought were easier to follow. If you are wanting to do some spiritual examining, then take a look at this book and see if it fits for you.

My Summer and Fall Activities

I was in an auto accident on 8/8/11 that caused a pelvic fracture, a right rib fracture and a collar bone fracture. I am doing better though not yet back to where I was before the accident. I have home therapy working with me to get back to the level where I was. I just wanted to share a picture of the van my son was driving and I was riding in. Amazes me still to look at it. I cannot discuss details of the accident at this time as there is a lawsuit involved but perhaps I can share in the future about it.
I also want to share that I am getting a divorce. That also is a long story so I won't bore you with those details. My marriage and my van are in the same shape: wrecked and totaled.

My Review:

Another great and hilarious book by this author. Matt Mikalatos uses his gift of humor and story telling about living a committed life of faith. It is so true. How many Christians out there in today's society are just going with the flow and not taking a serious look at their faith or the results of their actions. Don't let the title turn you away as there is nothing scary or gory in the book except maybe the fact that you may fall into the category of "living dead" Christian. The book gives the reader many things to consider. We may laugh at the silly antics of the characters but if we seriously look at the story and their actions we have a lot to learn about our own life of faith. I highly recommend this book. If you read "Imaginary Jesus" and liked what you read then you are sure to like this book as well. If you have not read either book than I suggest you pick both up and add to your reading list.

My Review:

This is the second book I have reviewed from this series and I liked it as much as the first. There is only one story that sounded vaguely familiar as if it might have been in the other book I read from the same series. Each chapter is a new story as Grandma tells of her adventures as a young girl. She is always finding interesting adventures to get into or experiencing some cute stories. It is just the type of stories that a grandmother would tell about her childhood. This is a great series empahsizing family values and good moral decisions. I recommend this reading for young girls. The books would make a great gift for that young girl in your life. Each chapter would make a great bedtime story to read together.

My Review:

I thought this was a great book about the author's personal experience and I am thankful that he was able to share it with us. The only thing that kept going through my mind as I was reading, was that I wished he could have shared more details with us. I don't know about you but when dealing with this topic or reading about it, I prefer lots of details. It is something that we have not all experienced and we are anxious to know more about it. I appreciate the author's honesty and sharing of this personal experience. There are many books out there and though they are similar, each is unique as the author that writes the story. It isn't just another book about a near death experience. If you enjoy reading about this situation, then I highly recommend this book. As with many other similar books, you come away with new thoughts and contemplations.

My Review:

Jesus tells the disciples that if they want to follow him that they must drop everything and let Him lead their way. This book is about one family that takes that advice seriously and makes some major changes. They give up eveything they have in their fine style of living and move into an RV where they live as they travel the country and do mission work for others. Can you imagine living in an RV with four children. Probably not a lot of space. The book is also filled with challenges that apply to the story of their journey and ask us to look at our lives and see how we can apply that challenge to our own lives. At first I was not sure what I would think of the book, but once I began reading it held my attention throughout. This is one amazing family that we can all learn from. Obviously we cannot all sell everything we have a live in RV's, however we can learn from their dedication to their faith and to God. Wbat are we willing to change in our lives to be more in line with service to God? This is a great book to read if you are wanting to think more about your service and life mission. I hope you find it as inspiring as I did when reading.

My Review:
The Bible says that a child holds the key to the kingdom of heaven and if we are to enter, we must be like a child. This is certainly played out in the life of Megan. In her innocence and limited thinking, she was full of love and knowing God. This is a wonderful book about a dad's love for his daughter and all that he learned from her because of her limitations. Her life was not governed by the ways of the world as her level of intelligence left her at a level that did not allow her to learn those ways. She had her own way of life that was based upon love and worship of the Lord. I highly recommend this book to others. It is one of those books that you cannot read and put down without being inspired. Her dad was blessed to have Megan in his life, and I was blessed to read about her life. If you want some inspiration and blessing then this is the book for you to read.

Patsy helps us to look at things from a new perspective so that we can have a more positive outlook on the difficulties in our lives. I just love the way she writes. He writing seems to flow with elegance and honesty. This is one of those books that I would put on a must read list as you will not regret taking the time to spend between the pages.

I am not sure what it was about this book, but I had a hard time following the readings. It just did not hold my attention as other Bible studies had. It is designed to follow scripture from Paul's letter to the Collosians and what lessons we can learn to build our confidence in God's promises. Maybe it is where I am in my life or recent experiences I have been through, but I could just not get myself interested in the study with this book. It is written with discussion questions to be used in group and individual study sessions. I would recommnd that you check out the book for yourself before you rely on my decision.

It is the right size for easy portablility, about 4x6 in size. The stories are positive in nature and I found them each to be inspirational. The scriptures match the readings well. They appeal to women and are written with women in mind. There's not a lot I can say about a devotional book, but if you are needing a new book for devotions, then this one would be worth checking out.

My Review:

I enjoyed reading this man's story however, I thought it would have impacted me more if it had more details about Bobby's experience. The situation itself is amazing to read about but I did not feel the detail that is present in other books of this nature. I am thankful to the author for sharing his experience with us as readers. It takes courage to share about such intimate experiences and many others can benefit from reading about the experience. Even though the book seemed to lack detail, it was a very good read.

Matt Redman shares personal stories of his faith and he encourages his readers to live a life shining the light of God's glory to everyone we meet. We can sing songs of worship, but for true worship of our Savior our lives must reflect God's light and glory. I found the book easy to read and not complicated with a lot of lecturing words. Despite our feelings of inadequacy, God will continue to work through us. The book contains many scriptural references for clarification along with the stories of personal experience from the author's life. I like the story that the author tells in the beginning of the book regarding the mirror ball. It is a clear representation of how a little of God's love and glory can be reflected to a large amount of people. It only takes a little to go a long way. The author has written many songs of worship and led multiple groups in the worship of Christ. He writes from a life of worship experience. He not only talks the talk but he also walks to walk.

My Review:
Interesting web of twists and turns to cover reality in this book of mystery and deceit. What happens when you find out the man you are about to marry isn't really who you think his is, or is he? Lots of confusion to work through and who do you trust? Lauren learns to trust her gut feelings in making life decisions. The back of this book states that readers who love Debbie Macomber, would enjoy reading this book. Having read some of her books as well, I would tend to agree.
The book is full of suspense with a character hanging on the edge of love. This certainly isn't your average daily romance novel. The complicated murder in the middle adds excitement and suspense. Books like this make me wonder why life has to be so complicated that we must keep secrets to protect those we love.

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading the stories in this book. The two main characters are Mabel and Sarah Jane who are best friends and are always finding little adventures to get into. The stories are written so that children can learn from reading about the consequences of the character's behaviors. Each chapter of the book is a different story about the characters, so they could be read as little bedtime stories. The plots stress family loyalty and wholesome moral values. Mabel is a little impulsive and her friend Sarah Jane keeps her on the right path. As a parent, I would highly recommend this book and others in the Grandma'a Attic series, as these are truly well written books for children.

My Review:

What an amazing story of forgiveness. The author lived a childhood with many traumas and miseries. He learns that once he accepts Christ in his life, he is able to forgive those who had caused him harm in the past. By writing the book, the author is hoping that he can use his life as an example to others in forgiving those for causing them harm. It was painful for me as a reader to read about this author's life experiences, but realizing that he was the one who experienced the pain and yet he was able to forgive, was the amazing part of this book. It would be difficult to not feel the impact of the author's journey after reading this book. He takes the opportunity as an adult to seek out those who harmed him as a young child and provide them with forgiveness. How many people can say that they have completed this level of forgiveness? Many can come to a level of forgiveness, but to go the extra step in re-approaching those we have forgiven takes a high level of courage. If you enjoy reading memoirs, and seeing God's influence on other's lives then I am sure you will enjoy this book.

This is a wonderfully illustrated children's book. It is about a homeless man who receives many blessings in his day. He encounters a man in the story that changes his life forever. I think this is a great book for children to teach them about giving and helping others. There are too many stories these days that tend to focus on the negative aspects in life, but this story focuses on the positive and making life better for others. The illustrations are bright and realistic, supplementing the story well. For the complex messages in the story, the author presents them with simplicity for children's understanding. This is a worthy children's story written with a positive educational message.

My Review:
This was an interesting fiction book that kept my attention throughout. The main character, Bridgett has been grieving her husband's death for a few years. She continues to wear her wedding ring and cannot move on with her life. Throughout the book, she learns to shed those parts of her old life for a new life developing in front of her. Chuck Swindell's Paws and Tails
This is an animated DVD story about two little bears who learn to put others before themselves. It is one ine a series by Chuck Swindell that focuses on teaching bibilical wisdom to kids. The characters are interesting and likable and easy for children to follow and understand. Kids will often watch and want to be like the characters they see in a movie or program. As a parent, I find this an acceptable method for teaching children appropriate behavior. By watching and hearing stories, children are more likely to understand and retain an important concept. Children can learn that there is a natural result for their behaviors. I don't usually review DVD's but this was an exception and I would recommend it for young preschool aged children.

I was just recently discharged from a rehab hospital. I was in a car accident on August 8 and suffered a pelvic fracture, rib fracture and a collarbone fracture. I spent three weeks in a rehab hospital trying to get moving better. I am far from back to normal but I am able to sit and read for short periods of time so I am trying to catch up with my reviews. Perhaps I can share more at a later time once my life has settled down.

My Review:
This is the fourth and final book in the Homelander Series by Andrew Klavin. Charlie West, the main character may only be a teenager, but he has seen more adventure in the last year than many people see in a lifetime, working with the FBI, fighting terrorists, spending time in prison, airplane crashes. The book is a fast paced adventure packed novel. With each turn of the page Charlie finds himself further in the middle of his most important mission, saving a major city from complete destruction. Characters from previous novels and Charlie's adventures return for this last book. I thought it was a great young adult novel and it addresses current issues that our world is facing today. Of course most teenagers will never experience the level of Charlie's drama, they can still enjoy reading about his thrilling adventure. I am looking forward to seeing more exciting writing from this author in the future.

My Review:

As also this author never disappoints her readers. Melody Carlson has written another fabulous book. The main character, Anna, has been verbally beaten down by her mother-in-law and taken advantage of for years. When her own mother has died, she returns to the river side home where she spent the days of her childhood. She finds the time there healing and renewing in many ways, giving her the strength to stand up for herself and create a life of her own that she enjoys. It is truly a remarkable story of faith, hope, and healing. The characters are endearing and each likable in the role they play in Anna's new life in her home at the river's edge. I could often picture the scenes along the river bank as I was reading the book. I truly wanted to jump into the pages of the book so that I could enjoy some peaceful, quiet and renewing time at Anna's inn.

My Review:
The author has presented a detailed explanation of angels based upon scriptural verses and his personal experiences. To date it is the most specific book I have read about angels. It is full of scriptual references that the reader can explore for further study. I found the reading very informative but at times a little dry so it took me a little longer to read than normally for me. I do like that it is strongly based upon scripture and is just not another person's viewpoints and impressions. If you are looking for a detailed description of the various types of angels from guardian angels to seraphims, then this would be a great book for you to read.

My Review:
I thought this was a fabulous easy to read book. It is written in a daily devotional format with a daily reading and focus of the various ascpects of life. Each week begins with a true life story of a person who has made changes to improve their health and lives. I like the daily format that encourages development of health goals and changes. I would recommend this to anyone who is wanting to make some health changes, as it provides daily encouragement and focus. The book uses a daily scripture reading that applies to the focus of the day. I would give this book high recommendations for inspirational reading.

My Review:

Somehow I got lost in the middle of this book and was searching for myself and my faith in the midst of all the scientific hypotheses stated. The author states that that " Our search has led us to the hypothesis that God either exists as all Energy, God exists as a specific type of energy-perhaps as so-called dark energy- or that the science of God is purely psychological phenomenon." What? As I am reading this I am thinking, how can any person think that he can come up with an explanation of God? God is certainly beyond our understanding and explanation. And I don't think that he can be explained in a book. The author admits this fact, but I still had a hard time following his logic. He presents several different religions and their beliefs of God and how these religions are similar in those beliefs. I believe he does this in an attempt to draw conclusions from those similar beliefs. I personally did not gain a lot from reading the book. I found many of the statements more confusing to the topic. It could have been my state of mind when reading the book as I realize that can have a big influence on what you read, so you may want to explore the book further or read more reviews before making up your mind.

Elizabeth read the supernatural messages and she didn't understand why God would speak to her in written words. But as her future life unfolds in vivid detail, she begins to see how much she needs God!

My Review:

I found the above description of the book deceiving. Yes, it is about a woman who is experiencing divorce and custody battles and her family, friends and church members turn away from her because of the choice of who she chooses to love. The part I thought was deceiving about the description is that it does not tell the reader that this is about a homosexual relationship. I don't want this statement to sound judgmental as I do not intend it to at all. I do think that reader needs to be aware of this in the event that they choose not to read the book as a personal preference. It truly is a story of trust and faith in God when everyone around the main character, Elizabeth, is turning their backs on her and judging her for her choice. It certainly isn't up to us to judge others. Any judgment of all of our actions for everyone of us will come from God. Elizabeth's faith remain persistent and grows despite all her adversities. She finds a place in her life where she is able to live without constant harassment from others. If you do not want to read about same sex relationships then this book would not be for you. I must admit though the issues of faith were remarkable, I am not sure I would have chosen the book had I known the main theme in advance.

I guess I had a different impression of what this book would be. It is a detailed description of creating small groups for Bible study, support, and connections that are based out of one church. I expected it to be more about how to make small groups work or suggestions for small group maintenance. It was too specific for me and described one church's way of building home groups within their church. If you are wanting to start a small-group ministry in your church, then this would be a good resource. As for managing a single small group, I do not think it would be very helpful. I really cannot say anything bad about the book as it was very detailed for what it was. It simply was not what I thought it would be by the title and description that I read.

I thought this book was excellent. It discusses the issues of money from a biblical perspective in an easy to understand and process format. I have read several books on money management but this has been the best I have read thus far. I would recommend this to any couple, whether they are newlyweds or a couple that has been married many years. The book does not tell you what to do with your money or how to create a budget, but it does give you God's teachings on money from the Bible that you can apply to your everyday lives. I like the way the author explains that everything we have is a gift from God and we are given it to use and manage while on this earth, thus the title. Randy Alcorn's books are always worth reading and this is no exception.

My Review:

I am not so sure the description of this book above gives it justice, so to speak. The author shares many stories of average people with multiple life issues, who are dealing with their death. All of them have experienced faults of the human flesh in this world and many live most of their life without relying on God. In each story, God finds a way to communicate with the person and they come to some end of life resolutions to their eternity. Some of the stories are a little amazing with events that seem unreal. However they are spiritual stories and I like how the author approaches each person, meeting them where they are, rather than lecturing them about salvation. I enjoyed reading the book and felt that through the author's writings, he was able to take the negativity out of death. So many, even those who are christian, see death as the end and a depressing loss. This book helps to dispel that myth, death is the beginning of a wonderful and eternal life with God for the believer. And as the thief on the cross hanging beside Jesus discovered, it is never too late to turn to God.

My Review:
The author has written a great book on the ministry of praying while you walk. It is a great form of exercise for the mind and the spirit. She spends time on both sides of the topic including helpful information on walking as an exercise and also on growing your life of prayer. Even if you are unable to walk, the sections on prayer are very helpful and informative. The book includes a 30 day challenge to get you started, along with a Bible study and suggestions for covering a community prayer walk. The author covers the subject thoroughly and with interest to the reader. The book is written to address women and issues that we face in our lives of prayer. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to expand their prayer life and willing to take on a new physical challenge at the same time.

My Review:

What can I say about a man who is willing to write about his disability and then give all the glory to God? Or perhaps, disability is the wrong word for me to use as Tim does not see himself as having a disability. He has challenges that he must overcome to accomplish his goals. I admire his openness and honesty in sharing his life with us. We can learn so much from him and he is proof that with God, all things are possible. Throughout the book, Tim also shares his love of sports, including his favorite sports moments and athletes. It is no wonder with his interest in sports that he strives to achieve his own sports goals. If you are having your own pity party because of your limitations, a few pages into this book and that party will change focus. Tim helps us to remember where our focus needs to stay. Off of ourselves and on our one True and Only God. I enjoy reading stories of triumph and accomplishment such as this and anytime I can share them with you on my blog I will. When I look at the author, I see an amazing man of God who is accomplishing his dreams with faith in God. And oh yeah, by the way he has no legs and only one arm, which certainly do not get in the way of his living life to the fullest and giving all the glory back to God.

My Review:

This is a great piece of fiction, but we have to keep that in mind, it is fiction. I have read reviews of this book that range from extreme love to extreme dislike. With most good books this is the case. There will be those who have opinions on both sides and to me that is what makes a great book. A book that makes the reader think and draw an opinion about the story. I cannot image reading this book and coming away from it without having some sort of reaction. It is full of mystery and symbolism, and with it the author weaves together a creative tale of the end of the world. There have been so many books and even a movie series written on this topic. For ages man has been trying to decipher the mystery that surrounds the prophecies and Revelations and predict the end of our world or the second coming of Christ. God is clear on so many things if we read the Bible, don't you think that if He wanted us to understand the apocalypse, He would have made it clearer to understand?

Therein lies the beauty of this type of fiction. The author calls it "engaged" fiction allowing the reader to take the information and interpret as he or she chooses. There is no right or wrong to the ending and we can take from it what we choose. If a book can engage my thinking and entertain me at the same time as this one did, then it is high on my recommendation list.

The book involves multiple characters and locations and in the beginning it can be a little confusing but as the plot goes on, it is all pulled together. After all, this is the end of the world we are reading about. Of course it will involve multiple people and countries and their reactions to the happenings around them.

The book contains a section at the end with the main character's notes and a glossary of related terms to allow the reader to draw some conclusions. The book held my interest throughout and the closer to the end I read, the harder it was for me to stop reading. If you are looking for great fiction, then this is the book for you. If you are looking for some definite answers, then I would recommend searching elsewhere.

My Review:
Are you interested in a short (only about 100 pages), power-packed book of wisdom on faith, prayer and our relationship with God? Then pick up Seeing the Unseen by T.W. Hunt.
As I began reading I thought this would just be another Christian book to add to my list of reading. Not that I do not gain something from all of them, but I have to say that this is one that I gained a great deal from reading. Each page is filled with wonderful insight on faith, prayer and our connections to God. I have not read any other book that explained prayer and faith to me in such a powerful way. "Faith plays a vital role in seeing the unseen; it is a choice to believe that the size of our request is no problem for omnipotence (p.26)." Our faith and prayer life are deeply connected. Without our faith in the unseen God, our prayers have little meaning and only become a checklist of our own wants and needs. This book is written with a simple to understand language and the author does not confuse or complicate the issues with a lot of extra words. It is to the point and written in a way that all can grasp and understand, no matter where you are on your Christian journey. As the author reminds us, it is a process that is ongoing. I highly recommend this book to you. I believe that it will change your thinking as much as it has changed mine.

My Review:
What a pleasure to read the second book by this author, Lori Laws! She writes with true honesty and opens her heart and soul to her readers. I have to tell you as I was reading Lori's book outside one afternoon, a butterfly landed on the book. They say that butterflies are a symbol of good luck but I also believe they are a touch from God reminding us He is always there. It was so fitting for what I was reading.
I cannot possibly quote my favorite or meaningful sections or statements in the book. Mostly because you would no longer be reading my review, but instead Lori's Book as I could not choose which words to leave out. With only one exception:

I really never thought I would here another person say these words:
"God has a plan and a purpose for me having Muscular Dystrophy."

What a powerful and humbling statement to make. It takes a lot of soul searching to get to this point in your life when you can say that your disability came from God to give Him glory. We always ask WHY? when bad things happen and after reading Lori's book, you will no longer wonder why? The answers will be in you heart and mind. She connects readers to the true life line of God and shares how she has developed her thinking and faith.
In the last chapter, she shares scriptures that are comforting to her. I too have Muscular Dystrophy and throughout the book, I felt like I was reading my own thoughts. Lori has such a talent for sharing her words and experiences with others and I highly recommend you read the latest volume of her book, A Blessing in the Storm.

My Review:
I must agree with the title of this book. The unbelievable adventures...this woman truly had some wonderful life adventures. She embraced each opportunity as it was before her and never gave a second thought to being active and experiencing life. I appreciate her candid story and I am thankful that she chose to share her experiences with readers. I enjoyed reading the first hand of accounts of life in Berlin during the war from a German perspective. There is so much about the war that we cannot get from history books. Memoirs like these present the entire story for all of us to be aware and learn from the experience. The author seemed to have unexpected things and coincidences happen to the point that it is almost too good to be true. But you can tell from the writing that this is a genuine story from a woman who wants to share.
Throughout it, you will find moments of history as it crosses the path of the author, adding to her adventures.

My Review:
I like how the book discusses all of us being able to have a continuing conversation with God. It was a well-written description of the author's experiences. I had only one issue with the book. It kept discussing purgatory and I know the concept, however where in the Bible is there information to support the existence of purgatory? I don't want to debate the issue as I am not really sure what I think. I would need to find Biblical support to grasp the belief in its existence. The book certainly is encouraging evidence that live continues on after our death from this world. And certainly that eternal life will depend upon how we have lived on this earth. You can gain from reading these experiences and do not have to agree with the concept of purgatory to benefit from reading this book

My Review:
My overall impression is absolutely amazing. As the description says the pictures are beautiful images and the words just seem to fit with the pictures. I like the rhythm of the poetry. Each poem has its own unique rhythm that seems to relate to the topic and speak the necessary words to relay the message. Each image can stand alone and that was the intent of the author, that they could be framed and hung on the wall or scanned as a screen saver. Each of these would look fabulous on an office wall or at home and the words are so encouraging. When I received the book in the mail, I was showing everyone the pictures as they drew me in immediately. There are sometimes images that just do that and make you one with nature and Mac Kenney certainly know hows to capture the beauty and natural wonder of his images. How can we even read a book like this or see these images and not thank God for the beauty that He gives us? The author reminds us that God's beauty is all around us if we only open our eyes and our hearts. I just cannot say enough positive words about this book as I was so impressed, so please check it out for yourself. It would make a great gift for a friend or family member and be sure to get your own so you can enjoy the images and poetry as well.

My Review:

I thought this book was just an exquisite story about life in 1895. The author attempted to write as much as possible pertaining to the reality of the time. It seems a little silly to me to think of balls, gowns, showing off wealth, but that is the way things were done at that time. It interests me that all the young main characters are attempting to live a life to please someone other than themselves and none of them are happy. They find their happiness and love when they learn to live for themselves. I connected with Rowena. She had a limp from a long term injury to her leg and felt out of place in society because of her "infirmity." The wealthy actually looked down upon those who were less than perfect. Though I am far from being wealthy, I have felt that feeling of being looked down upon because of my disability. You have to come to a point where others opinions no longer matter and you find ways to live beyond your limitations. I liked how Rowena was able to do this in the novel. Though the other characters had no physical limitations, they also were limited by society and also needed to come to a place where opinions did not matter. I really liked the story. I am not one for romances, however this is not a romance type novel. I found it to have much more substance and it kept my interest throughout the book. I liked how the author added facts from history as they relate to the chapters at the end of the book and her comments about the dresses of the times. I do recommend this for your summer reading list. I believe you will enjoy it as much as I.

Children's Book Review: Thomas and Erin with Grandad: Market Day

Book Description:
Childrens book for children under five. It is a story about Grandad, his grandson Thomas, who is 3 1/2 and Erin his grandaughter who is 2 and their adventures.

My Review:
Keeping in mind that this was a book for children under five, I thought it was a nice story and would be good for children learning to read. It emphasizes the relationship of a grandfather with his grandchildren and tells the story of them doing things together. It was a pleasant little story, but I cannot help mention that I was bothered by the graphics on the cover. I realize that these are children's drawings but to me the pictures look a little ghostly, being all white with heavy black outlines. This could potentially be frightening to some young children. This is just my opinion as I did not have any young children to show the book to. I did ask other adults and they had the same reaction I did to the cover. But as the old saying goes, you certainly cannot judge a book by the cover as this book is very pleasant inside.

My Review:
As I began reading this book, I thought the story seemed familiar though I could not remember the specifics. As it turns out, this is a republication with updates from the author. The original version of the book was written in 2007 and it was updated and published by the author in 2011. The author in addition to making updates wants readers to be aware of the current conditions in the church in India. Though I had read the story a few years back, this was definitely a story worth reading more than once. The books is full of suspense and takes you on a ride that you will not forget. I will warn you that you will not know who tells the truth until the very end. Deceit is a common occurrence as it really is in the world. Which emphasizes in my mind that God is the only one with the truth and the truth does not come from the world. When we want to do the right thing and tell the truth we must rely on God in our lives. There are so many characters in the book, but the author weaves together plot twists that will keep you entertained and interested. And can you imagine a formula that will change the encryption methods of the world and allow the owner of this formula to gain access to multitudes of protected information? Of course, everyone who is aware wants to gain access, but can that access be protected by the ones who were entrusted with its secrets? The book does contain some scenes of torture and killings, though I did not find them to be graphic or distracting from the story. It is all part of the total plot and the characters involved in the mystery with FBI, government and mob playing their parts. If you are looking for a good suspense novel with Christian involvement, then I do recommend this as a great read.

My Review:
This is one of those books that after closing the book, my mind is thinking "Wow, very powerful words." The author gives a wonderful explanation of grace and makes it applicable to all women. I like that she used some actual stories to add to the understanding of her principles. The book is set up to be used as a 12-week women's Bible study with sections at the end of each chapter that can be done daily. The questions are written for women to ask themselves and contemplate on each area discussed. As women, we try hard to be the perfect wife, the perfect friend, the perfect employee, the perfect mother and on and on and on. But we just set ourselves up for failure as God has never asked us to be perfect and He gives us His grace so that we do not have to. I read the book in a much shorter time than the 12 weeks as designed and I was still able to gain from the book and get a lot out of the reading. I highly recommend this study for women to complete and I can see where using a small group would be beneficial for the study for discussion purposes.

I wonder, like I said in the last post I am not a genius, but how do you win the Irish Lottery if you have never been to Ireland and have never bought a ticket. I get daily emails that I have won and just need to send them my personal information so they can wire me the money. Maybe they do the lottery a little different in Ireland, you suppose? Ok, I am being sarcastic but I am tired of deleting all the emails about lotteries that I have won around the world. Most make it to my spam box, but I still have to delete them. If only I had the money that all these emails promise me. Well, I could be pretty wealthy and have dinner with Donald Trump.

My Review:
I have never worked in the business world and I don't consider myself an Einstein. but I worked for 20 years as a Registered Nurse in the medical field and was considered a productive and innovative employee with positive evaluations for my work performance. Now that you know where my brain is coming from, let me tell you what I think of this book. I found the information to be fascinating and applicable to all situations, not just interactions in the business environment. I must admit it is heavy information but it is presented in a way that is understandable with actual examples where appropriate. The book uses a concept and application format where the author first explains the concepts involved and then explains how these concepts of Neuroscience can be applied to human interactions, especially in the business field with leaders, managers and coaches. Each chapter ends with a conclusion and a summary chart to simplify the information in a quick reference format. I wish I could share all the concepts I learned from reading the book about positive thinking, trust, intuition, and enhancing brain functions, but if I did that then you would not want to read the book, because you would have all the information. If the power of the mind and brain interests you, then I am sure you would find this book captivating as well. It was well worth reading for the information I learned especially on the topics I listed.

My Review:
This is a good book for couples wanting to improve the quality of their relationship within their marriage. It has many questions for exploration and is strongly based upon scripture with readings throughout and questions from those readings. I found the book to be very positive and I think if many couples would take the time to examine their relationship, we would have less marriages ending in divorce. The couple that wrote this book did divorce, but that was only the beginning for them. They chose to work on the relationship and ended up getting remarried again. Any couple could benefit from this book, new and old, especially those who are feeling stuck. It is not the solution to all marital problems. I don't think any book could be that, but it certainly can give some strong Christian guidelines for couples.
This book shows couples how to put God first in their marriage. It could be read individually or be done as an eight week study.

The Power of Positive Thinking

Please note this is not my review of the book. it will be coming later this week, but I just had to share some thoughts with you.

I am reading a book right now that is fascinating, called "Your Brain and Business." Yes, it applies to the business world but we can take so many of the concepts and apply them to our lives. It states in the book that hope and optimism activate the thought centers in our brains, thus increasing productivity and decreased our sensation of pain, whereas as negative thinking impairs these processes. I have always been told the story of the little train that said "I think I can, I think I can" and then climbed the hill, but this tells me with scientific proof through brain imaging and studies. I know when our lives are full of pain and we can hardly get out of bed this seems like a drop in a bucket and how can we possibly have hope and optimism when we feel so bad? We can put our hope in God and look for the positives in our days. Hey, what can it hurt? In fact studies show we will receive our pain sensations less with positive thinking. So in fact the question would be hey, what cannot it not hurt? If your brain is up to some processing of some interesting information, I highly recommend this book. I will be reviewing it on my blog later this week. I will share some more information about the book after I read the book. This information is very impressive. Give hope, optimism and positive attitude a try, you might like the outcome!

My Latest Discovery

I just have to tell you about my latest way to shop. If I could get all my groceries from them, I would do it in a heartbeat, especially with the rising cost of gasoline. The site is www.Alice.com. You have to check it out. They have name brands, healthy alternatives, environmentally safe products, personal care items, paper products and even make-up. If you are like me and essentially homebound and don't get out much, then this is one way that you can order just what you want without sending someone to the store hoping they pick the correct brand. Prices are reasonable and sometimes they have items marked down with coupons. My favorite is a brand of Lentil Chips. They only require that you order 6 items at a time and there is no shipping. Occasionally they through in samples which are actual full size products. It only takes me two days to get my order. You have to try it out, you won't be sorry. I have ordered from them several times now and I have not yet been disappointed. And by the way I am getting nothing for telling you about this except for the happiness of charing something good with my friends.

My Review:

Maybe it is just the curiosity in me or maybe its the way my brain functions, but I have always found books about the FBI, CIA, CSI, and other investigative and clandestine services to be extremely interesting. They don't fit my typical Christian and historical reviews, but when a good one comes along, I just cannot pass it up. This is the situation with this book. The author kept my attention and interest page after page. There was action going on with every turn of the page. It had its not so pleasant moments, but they were not terribly graphic nor did they make me want to quit reading the book. I found myself cheering inside for the good characters, hoping they would be successful in their mission. I thought that it was a good read and the fact that the author had some experience in Black Ops added to the realistic character of the book. As with real life, people can be deceiving and you never really know who are the good guys and who are the wolves in sheep's clothing. For a different type of read, give this one a try. If all that espionage and secret operations stuff interests you, like it does me, then you are sure to like this book as well as I did.

My Review:

Teen suicide is one of those topics that we all want to avoid discussing, but the statistics seem to be increasing with time. Melody Carlson has written an honest portrayal of teen thoughts, feelings, and circumstances that lead teens to make this horrific and permanent decision. Though it is fiction, it also addresses the ways that families, friends and even schools can intervene. Carlson is an excellent YA author. She tackles the issues that are pertinent to teens and shows them ways that they can find God in the midst of their struggles. I highly recommend her books for the YA reader and even for parents or teachers who are wanting to see the issues from the perspective of their teens.

My Review:

This is one of those books that I wasn't too sure about after reading the description. However, I did receive two copies in the mail, so I thought it at least deserved my time to be read. I received one complimentary copy from the publisher, Waterbrook Multnoma and another copy from an unknown source. The mailing envelope for the second copy was tossed and there was no identification with with the book. My family sometimes helps me by opening the packages, but this time it backfired and I apologize that I cannot credit the source for the book. If it becomes known to me in the future I will include with this review.
With that being said, the book did have its good qualities. It showed the persistence of a mother's prayers for her son. He was living quite a risky life full of parties, drug use, drug dealing, and promiscuity in the homosexual community. Homosexuality is often a topic that we tend to avoid and turn our heads away from. We know that the Bible states that the behaviors are sinful, but we also know that Jesus tells us to love all, including those who have sinned. While this book is not a debate or Bible study on the subject, I thought it did a wonderful and honest job of portraying a homosexual man's journey to God, and the never ending love of a mother for her son. Though it was not self chosen, I am glad that I was given the opportunity to read this book and as the description states it would be a good read for those ministering to the homosexual community.

They will send for the others once he's established a foothold and assessed the situation.

Caleb's daughters are thrown into turmoil. Rachel doesn't want to leave Jake. Her sister, Emma, who has been courting Levi Mullet, fears her dreams of marriage will be dashed. Miriam has never had a beau and is acutely aware there will be no prospects in Mexico.

Once there, they meet Domingo, a young man and guide who takes a liking to Miriam, something her father would never approve. While Paradise Valley is everything they'd hoped it would be, it isn't long before the bandits start giving them trouble, threatening to upset the fledgling Amish settlement, even putting their lives in danger. Thankfully no one has been harmed so far, anyway.

My Review:

If you like reading Amish fiction,then you are sure to love this latest book by Dale Cramer. The characters are authentic and likable in many ways. The entire family is moved far from home, even to another country. Each character has issues with the move but their stories blend well together creating a work of fiction that is true to family loyalty and Amish traditions. The story held my attention and interest as the plot continued to unfold with its little secrets and bits of adventure. I cannot help but admire the courage of a family that is willing to give up their comfortable home and start over in a new place where there is no community, so that they could hold true to their beliefs and values. Not only a new place, but an empty valley where they rebuild their home and farm with their own strength and determination. This was an enjoyable read that I would recommend to my fellow Christian and Amish fiction readers.

My Review:

Do unto others... we are taught this from the time we are a young child. This is the basis for this book on helping. According to their author, "When people do unto others in kindness, it lights up the primitive part of the brain that also lets us experience joy." Helping others, helps us to get through the tough times in life. When we are focused on others, it takes the focus off ourselves and we are able to heal the hurting parts of our lives. The author shares information from studies that support the positive aspects of giving to others and how we can benefit from the experience. If only more people could live by this way of life, imagine what a better world this would be. Jesus always told his disciples to give to others and to work toward meeting the needs of others. The authors encourages us all to give to others to inspire hope and compassion. By giving to others we can heal the wounds and suffering in our own lives as well as those around us. The book was very inspirational and written in a way that was encouraging to read. It would make a good group or individual study, looking at the involved Biblical principles. My Review:

I have always admired the simplicity of the Amish way of life. Their lives would be difficult at times because they do not use the conventional convenient appliances that make our work loads easier. But along with the extra works they gain many pleasures that we tend to miss out on because of our rushing way to get things accomplished. Family and traditions are very important aspects of the Amish life. This book was a pleasure to read. Both women share thoughts from their lives and their relationships with God. The book helped me to remember that its the simple things that are often the most significant in our lives. This book speaks to the hearts of women and sharing friendships. It was one of those books that I just kept reading and did not want to put down. I found it to be very inspirational and I highly recommend it as a good Christian read for women. Despite their differences in lifestyles, these women share many thoughts of the heart and how their trust in God has influenced their lives. With each chapter, Cindy shares typical Amish traditions, so the book also allows you to learn more about their way of life, in addition to the inspiration of their words. You won't regret adding this book to your summer reading list.

My Review:
Growing Kingdom Character is a thorough Biblical study on the ten characteristics required to make a successful leader. Thomas Edison was known for saying, "What a man's mind can create, man's character can control." Being a great leader is not a matter of being able to tell others what to do or even having a large following. Being a great leader involves certain character traits that carry over in all aspects of a leader's life. I think this is a great study for persons wanting to learn more about being a leader in any role. It not only applies to those in ministry positions but to all leaders. The study is strongly based upon scripture and gives many scripture references for the reader to look up and think about. It also lists ways in which you can pray pertaining to that trait and ways to develop that trait in your leadership style, allowing you to develop you own personal plan for character development. I have not yet read a Bible study from NavPress that has disappointed me. This one holds true to the character of its publisher.
This is a study that will require some time and commitment to complete but it is well worth the effort in its intended outcome.

My Review:

This was a wonderful book of prayers that parents can pray for their children. It consists of 13 weeks of prayers, a prayer for each day of 90 days. The prayers are scripturally based, providing inspiration and support to parents who are having some difficulties with or even worries about their children, young and old. Scriptural references are provided throughout the book. I found some of the prayers to be appropriate for any parent to pray for their child. I thought it was a great book of prayer and I would highly recommend this book to parents who are wanting to pray for the faith and salvation of their child. As parents, the lives and decisions of our children weigh heavy on our hearts, and this is one book that would help to begin a habit of praying daily for your son/daughter. It also provides a solid and faithful example of a life of prayer. Each week of prayers is proceeded by an introduction for the focus of the prayers that week. The weekly introductions include personal stories from the author and biblical stories that add to the quality of the explanations. Each introduction is encouraging and provides hope for the answer to prayer. In reading these prayers I was reminded of and inspired by the following song that I wanted to share with my review. It fits appropriately with the prayers and gives hope to those who read the book. As I was reading the book, I repeatedly heard the song in my mind.

My Review:

This is the third book in a personal retreat series by this author. I have previously read and reviewed the other two books in the series. The book begins with guidelines for making a personal retreat and how to get the most out of your retreat. This book is based upon Psalm 23 which is referred to as a "confidence psalm." The author breaks down Psalm 23 into sections and asks readers to meditate on various aspects of the the psalm and what those areas mean to their lives. Jan Johnson writes wonderful retreat guides that would be very beneficial to a Christian wanting to complete a personal retreat. She focuses on building a personal relationship with God and ways to build your trust and confidence in God through a retreat. I enjoyed this book as much as the other two and I do recommend this to other Christians. If you are unable to take time out for a retreat, then this book could be read and studied at home in a quiet place without interruptions, breaking it down into smaller segments of time. You won't regret taking the time to read this book as well as the other two in the series, entitled "Living in the Companionship of God" and "Learning to Hear God."

My Review:

This is the second in the Secrets series and it is an amazing story for young adult readers. It shows that lying only compounds upon itself and creates more problems that are even more difficult to deal with or get out of. There is always a way out of any situation, even though it may seem difficult. Carlson is an excellent young adult writer. She speaks to the heart of teenage girls and seems to comprehend their thought processes very well. As an adult, I also enjoyed reading this book and found interest in the story. I think all teenage girls can come away from this book with thoughts to ponder and consideration that the consequences of their actions affect others. If you have any young women in your life, I would recommend this book as well as others from the Secrets series by Melody Carlson.

My Review:

As Christians, we all claim to know about the gospel. That is what when learn in church and when we read our Bibles, right? According to Jerry Bridges in this book, most Christians know very little about the gospel or understand its actual implications for their daily lives. He breaks the gospel down into the basics and explains each thoroughly in a way that I have not read before. He brings the practical into the picture. The gospel is something we must live by every day of our lives and Bridges shares with us what that would mean in the life of a believer. I liked his explanations and his use of modern stories to make his points. It gave me a more in depth understanding of the meaning of the cross and the gospel. Jerry Bridges challenges Christians in his thought provoking writings. The is one of several books I have read by this author and he does not disappoint you when he promises understanding. This book is true to his writing style and straightforward in its delivery. He bases all his writing on the word of God in the scriptures and gives references throughout his writings. I highly recommend this book for Christians wanting to do some further study on the meaning of the gospel.

Book Review: Reflections of My Mind Volume 1

My Review:

This is a collection of poems written by the author on a variety of life experiences from substance use and losses to relationships and dreams. Though many poems lacked a lot of expanding and seeking alternatives, there was one that I did like, entitled Humilty. The last lines being:

AS FOR ME, I WILL CONTINUE BEING HUMBLE IN ALL OF MY WAYS
GIVING GLORY TO GOD IN ALL OF MY DAYS.

It thought it would have added to the book to have some information about the author included in the book. It would have giving the poems a little more depth and significance, knowing about the person writing them. As they were published they seemed like random poems in a book. Maybe even a short introduction might have added to some understanding. I admire the author for the courage to put his thoughts out there in poems. I just did not find many of them to make much impact on my thinking. Of course what I appreciate in poetry may not be the same for other people so check it out for yourself.

My Review:

The author's letter to his wife was a very effective method of story telling and a unique writing technique for this book. The entire book is based upon a true story and is one letter that portrayed the positive and negative events in the history of this family. Life has many unexpected turns and even disappointments which are described in this book from a place of love and acceptance. Despite life's turmoil and tragedies, the author maintains his belief and confidence in the sovereignty of God. The story was written with a level of honesty and intimacy that added to the quality of the book. I found it to be a pleasant and inspiring read and I would recommend it to others. It held my attention throughout without any dull moments. You too will be encouraged by Dr. Kohein's faith and hope.

My Review:

Memoirs have always interested me, learning about other's lives and experiences. But I found this book especially interesting and entertaining as I worked as a registered nurse for 20 years. Dr. Mendelsohn expresses a different side of the medical community that is often not spoken about. As a Neurosurgeon, he has the utmost respect for his patients. Some of the stories are written from the patient point of view which is compelling since medical personnel often focus on the procedure rather than the patient. Throughout the book, the author clearly expresses his belief that is often forgotten by caregivers. Patients who are in comas and appear to be unconscious can potentially hear what is said around them. He would not talk about a patient at his bedside. He would talk with the patient. I really thought this was an excellent book written with much thought and creativity. I have had the experience of being in the patient's shoes recently. Many compliments to Dr. Mendelsohn for a well-written piece of literature.
